Foothills Golf Club

This Arizona Golf Review is taking us into the foothills of "The Too-kee", our destination this time is playing at The Foothills Golf Club. Let me quickly say Ahwatukee is fantastic! Great places to eat, great bars, healthy people. Seriously, it looks like the freakin Boston Marathon in the mornings around there! The golf club is very easy to get to. If you know don't know about Ahwatukee, it is the worlds largest cul-de-sac. Once you get to the course, the outside attendants are ready and willing  to grab your bags. The team at ifigolf would like to thank the staff for letting us on the course complimentary...ifigolf.com really does appreciate it! However, in no way swaying our opinion....Sorry! At The Foothills Golf Club you will get rates around $30 during the lowest season and as high as $100 in the prime season. Lets not get it twisted here, $100 a round to play golf is outrageous! There aren't many  courses in Arizona that deserve that price tag, but economics are what they are. This time it was a freakin steam bath, for Arizona golf purposes, so plenty of fluids were needed. The beverage stand was close to the first tee and they were very reasonable. Bud Lights @ $3.00 was down right fantastic compared to many of the other courses that we have played. The first tee is a fairly difficult opening drive if you have never played there before. The sneaky architects hid some water behind a crest just, nicely positioned within a "short knocks" distance to get wet. The course plays overall very nice. Many scenic holes and dramatic stadium style greens. There is plenty of fun holes to pound driver for the green, even if you know you can't get there. The fairways were...how you say.....HARD! But those of us needing it were getting an extra 20yds. Unfortunately, in many places it was anyones guess if you were in fairway, or cartpath grown over with a grass like substance.  Anyhow, the greens held pretty well, probably cause is was soooo damn steamy, and because we wre playing in the aftermath of the dreaded green punch. That might explain the complementary status? As you know in Arizona, punching the greens is a regular event in the summer and we understand that the greens are not always like this, and we took that into consideration when deciding on the review. After taking a few holes to get used to the plinko like game on every putt, the round became more enjoyable.  The bev cart lady was very nice. We saw her a total of 6 times in the round, which is better service than most restaurants in town.

So to this point the course and round are good. There are the little neances that all courses have and things are looking up. Very nice scenery of the foothill, a playable course, very nice beer lady, and then BOOOM! The GD sand trap!! Da beach...a place none of us like. As I approached my fried egg,  prepared to fling sand for miles I was pleasantly suprised! Unlike many courses around Arizona, this place found the sand fountain of youth!! For some reason, in which I will never understand, of all the maintenance cuts a course could do, I wonder if getting rid of sand in exchange for a salt flat, proves to be cost effective? Honestly a guy should get a free drop from that crap, you could get a better lie on the cart path. Anyhow, after being a "little" upset that my ball was actually in the trap...I was happy when I stepped in and felt my feet sink in an inch or two. I am not sure how everyone else likes or dislikes bunkers, but we prefer the sand  fluffy or simply existant!. I am going to say honestly there are a few other courses that I would have rather played for the money but the upside to this place was the change in course scenery. From a players standpoint some spray off the tee was still ok. If you do find the rough or as we say "the crap" finding and playing your ball was definitely possible. Playable courses always lead to a better round. So for the money The Foothills will always produce a very nice scenic golf round. Also, this Arizona golf course always has a serene feel thanks to being tucked back in the Foothills. Its quite and you can actually relax. So overall for the time of year dictating the price we enjoyed it. I will also publicly state this is in no way a $100 dollar course, anytime of the year...Just Sayin! Now the moment you have all been waiting for...the IFIGOLF rating!

Overall on the IFIGOLF scale of 1-10...The Foothills Golf Course gets a 6
